Building a Well in Mwakapandula (Zambia)

When was the last time you were parched? Like really, really, really in need of some fluids?

If you’re like me, it was hard to think of a time…ever. Maybe once at summer camp. But the majority of my life is spent comfortably within the proximity of plenty of water: water bottles, water fountains, water faucets and hoses that need only the twist of a handle. I don’t know what it’s like to really be without water. I’m guessing you’re probably in the same boat?

So it’s hard to envision what it’s like for people who don’t have easy access to a continuous flow of safe water at their disposal. It’s hard because I don’t know the dizziness or weakness that accompany dehydration; I don’t know the anxiety or unrest that come with not knowing if there will be enough water, or safe enough water. I don’t know the way a community could break down if each person were deprived of something so necessary to the human body’s proper functioning as water.

Thankfully, there are people who think about these problems, even when they themselves aren’t being directly affected. Enter “Living Water International.” This organization works to provide villages with clean water wells that enable their communities to thrive in a really practical way – namely, by having enough water to live, and to live healthy.

Midtex Oil recently launched Mpact Initiative, a company project in which we donate to charities like Living Water International with the money we raise (and then match) from selling our specially marked water, gum, and mints. At the time of this writing, we have been able to donate approximately $7,400 to Living Water, which has enabled them to repair a well in Mwakapandula, Zambia (say that 10 times fast), a community of 60 families who were previously retrieving unsafe water from a mud hole in order to meet their needs.
