Why Bother With a New Website?

This summer, Midtex Oil decided to undergo a technological facelift by creating and launching a new website. As petroleum distributors and local convenience store operators, a new website seemed like a curious, if not unnecessary, investment. We're about to celebrate our 50th anniversary - that's 50 years of successfully operating a business, more or less without the help of a newly renovated website. So why take the step? Why go through the effort of a website overhaul, if there isn't an obvious need? Or even, really, an obvious benefit? We decided to move forward with the website for the following reasons:

  1. We want to create another channel of communication that will help us better serve our customers; we want any information they may need readily available to them, and we want to provide another venue of contact so that we can be easily reached.

  2. We want to increase our visibility; we want to maintain our existing, valued customer relationships, while fighting against stagnation by expanding our reach. This means, among other things, popping up somewhere other than the 10th page of Google when someone types in "wholesale petroleum."

  3. We want to move with the times, not against them. The Internet has few rivals in usefulness and prominence in our society. If our customers are using the Internet to make their lives easier (and most everyone is,) we want to partner with these forces for "good" (by which I mean efficiency,) not ignore them.

If you're operating a business that doesn't seem like it would gain any direct benefit from a website, or a website redesign, I would encourage you to take a moment to consider the potential benefits that could be reaped from a little investment in your Internet real estate. Websites aren't just for online stores and "glamorous" industries - they are practical tools, the face of your company to those who haven't physically interacted with your business, and opportunities for growth.

We would love to rearrange the pixels in our little corner of the Internet to be useful, helpful, and relevant to you. Please take some time to let us know how we can better do that!
